Bill Carey Takes on Hofstra

On Monday, March 2, news figure and creator of Think TV Bill Carey came to the Hofstra University campus to enlighten young Journalism students on his career. Carey is a skilled communications executive and an exceptional leader who has a long career in the professional news field. He has worked for CBS News, WPIX, started his own news sources such as Roscommon Holdings, and so much more. He brought his almost 40 years of knowledge to the Lawrence School of Communications where he spoke with college students ready to take on the world.

He began his presentation by teaching the students how to write properly, a skill that he believes was crucial in the success of his career. Carey explained, “Here I am at the tail end of my career… if you can master writing, you will always be employable. If you are best in wit, putting stories together, it will open so many doors for you.” He followed this statement with three easy tips on how to draw the audience in when writing for any type of news show, television production, or anything in that field. He explained that as long as you know your material, are able to connect emotionally with your audience, and have good storytelling fundamentals, you will be successful. A veteran in the broadcasting field, Carey also told the students personal experiences of his where people disliked his material and did not treat him fairly. “In the workplace, everyone owes you a fair criticism… treat people with respect because they deserve that”, Carey told the Hofstra students.

While speaking about his experiences as leading news broadcast, Carey clearly values hard work and fair treatment in the workplace. The news veteran stayed after for questions and urged students to directly reach out to him for help getting their careers started.

Should the Houston Astros Players Face Consequences for Cheating?

On Tuesday, February 25, 2020, I put a poll up on my Instagram page asking a question related to arguably the biggest cheating scandal in sports history…

It was revealed shortly after this past World Series that the Houston Astros were caught cheating during the 2017-19 seasons. In 2017, the ball club captured their first World Series title in franchise history and brought life back to Houston sports. They had a historic team full of talent that most likely would have won the title cleanly either way. However, the club chose to go on an alternative root and use electronics to illegally steal signs from their opponents. This means that they knew every pitch that was coming to them.

Once this story was revealed, athletes and fans around the world negatively spoke out against the Astros. While the club faced financial consequences and their GM and manager were released, the players were given full immunity and protection. This means that none of them were suspended, fined, or faced any consequences at all.

I asked on my Instagram page if the Astros players should personally face consequences because they were the ones who were behind all of the cheating. Out of the 114 people who answered, 94 of them said yes and 20 said no.

This means that about 83% of those votes are in favor of the Astros players receiving real punishment for their wrongdoings that has personally affected player’s lives. Teams were eliminated from playoff contention, players were released from teams, and more all because the Astros used electronics to cheat their way to the World Series. Houston Astros Scandal Debate

The news story that I chose to focus on for my crowdsourcing assignment was the Houston Astros cheating scandal. The Houston Astros were caught cheating during the 2017-19 and are now facing punishments heading into the 2020 season. The team has been punished, however the players have gotten full immunity and are under protection from the league and the angered players/fans.

Trust in Media at Historic Lows!

Throughout the 20th and 21st century specifically, there has gradually been a historic rise in technology that has shaped the world significantly. With the boom in technology, people were excited to have it be used in media platforms and help make them better and more accessible to the people. As years passed and media grew more and more, the people’s interest and trust in the media began to decrease.

In 2020, trust in American mass media is hitting its all-time lows and losing their credibility as the days pass. I feel that a main reason for people losing interest or trust in the media is because they feel like the accuracy of the news has diminished. I believe that politics has had a huge negative impact on mass media. While coverage has become extremely advanced, especially in America, it has become too focused on in the media. Many politicians do not tell the truth or especially in today’s world act childish and immature. This gives the media a bad reputation when they are constantly covering it in such detail and viewers are constantly lied to.

Another reason could also be because of the excess of technology platforms that people are so easily accessible to now. There are all different new sources whether they be professional well-known ones or platforms off of #snapchat, #instagram, #twitter, and more broadcasting news with no real credibility most of the time. I also feel the public people are too powerful on social media and have their own outlets where they are extremely opinionated.

In order to reverse this trend, I feel like there should not be as many platforms with all different information. I also feel like the coverage on politics is too much. I understand politics are important, but the immature battles between conservative and liberal sources bending the truth in news has become way too much for me to handle and clearly the public has not reacted to it well either. One way or another, media has declined in its popularity and credibility.

AARON BOONE WAS FOLLOWED BY YANKEES’ ACE GERRIT COLE. COLE LOOKED SHARP THIS MORNING… HE WAS LOCKED IN AND THROWING SOME HEAT!

ACCORDING TO NJ.COM’S ARTICLE ON THE YANKEES START TO SPRING TRAINING, MANAGER AARON BOONE COMMENTED, “EVERY PITCH HE MAKES, WHAT IT’S DOING, WHAT IT NEEDS TO LOOK LIKE, HIS MECHANICS THAT ARE INVOLVED WITH IT… HIS ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS SPECIAL…”

THE YANKEES HAVE FOCUSED A LOT ON STARTING RHP MASAHIRO TANAKA WHO ENTERS HIS SEVENTH YEAR OF MAJOR LEAGUE PLAY. TANAKA WAS A KEY PLAYER IN THE POSTSEASON RUN FOR THE YANKEES DURING THE 2019 SEASON. THE CLUB NEEDS TANAKA TO COME UP BIG THIS YEAR, ESPECIALLY WITH THE RECENT UNFORTUNATE NEWS ABOUT PAXTON’S EXPECTED ABSENCE FOR THE FIRST COUPLE OF MONTHS OF THE SEASON. ALONG WITH GERRIT COLE AND LUIS SEVERINO, MASAHIRO TANAKA IS GOING TO HAVE TO LEAD THIS BALL CLUB WITH CONSISTENT SUCCESS.

WHILE THE NEWS ON PAXTON’S RECENT INJURY WAS A BLOW FOR THE BOMBERS, THE YANKEES PREPARED THEMSELVES FOR ANY SITUATIONS THAT WOULD ARISE SIMILAR TO THIS… MANY YANKEES FANS WERE ON BOARD WITH TRADING AWAY THE 37-YEAR-OLD LEFT-HANDER J.A. HAPP FOR MORE TALENT OR CASH CONSIDERATIONS. HOWEVER, THE OFFICE’S MOVE TO KEEP HAPP ON THE ROSTER TURNED OUT TO BE BENEFICIAL…

ONE PLAYER WHO ARRIVED EARLY THIS YEAR TO SPRING TRAINING WAS 2018 A.L. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP, MIGUEL ANDUJAR. ANDUJAR BURST ON THE SCENE WHEN HE DEBUTED IN EARLY APRIL OF THE 2018 SEASON… HOWEVER AN INJURY FOLLOWING HIS FANTASTIC SEASON WOULD LEAVE HIM ON THE BENCH FOR ALMOST ALL OF THE 2019 SEASON. UNFORTUNATELY FOR HIM, WHILE HE WAS ABSENT, THE YANKEES LOCKED DOWN GIO URSHELA AS THEIR STARTING THIRD BASEMEN. THIS LEAVES ANDUJAR TO HAVE TO SHARE THIRD BASE AS WELL AS BECOME FAMILIAR WITH OTHER POSITIONS ON THE DIAMOND. ANDUJAR SHOWED WITH HIS PRACTICE IN THE OUTFIELD HOW HE CAN BE A UTILITY PLAYER TO THE CLUB IF THEY NEED HIM.

ONE PLAYER THAT IS IN NEED OF A BREAKOUT SEASON IN 2020 IS YANKEES OUTFIELDER/DH GIANCARLO STATON. STANTON, 30, HAS NOT MATCHED UP TO THE SUCCESS THAT WAS EXPECTED OF HIM COMING OFF OF HIS MVP YEAR WITH THE MARLINS IN 2017. HE HAS STRUGGLED WITH INJURIES, SPECIFICALLY ONES LAST SEASON THAT KEPT HIM ON THE BENCH FOR 144 REGULAR SEASON GAMES.

HE DID RETURN FOR THE PLAYOFFS HOWEVER FOUND LITTLE SUCCESS THERE EITHER BEFORE RE-INJURING HIMSELF IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES AGAINST THE ASTROS. GM BRIAN CASHMAN STILL BELIEVES THAT THEIR DECISION TO SIGN STANTON WAS A GOOD ONE, BUT AS FANS WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE IF HE CAN STAY HEALTHY AND BE THE STAR THAT WE ALL WANT HIM TO BE.

THE YANKEES ARE NOT THE ONLY BALL CLUB SHOWING UP FOR SPRING TRAINING… THE HOUSTON ASTROS HAVE BEEN THE SPOTLIGHT OF ATTENTION OVER THE WINTER WITH CONSTANT NEWS BEING ABOUT THEIR CHEATING SCANDAL. DURING THE YEARS OF THEIR CHEATING, THE KNOCKED THE YANKEES OUT OF THE PLAYOFFS AND KILLED THEIR DREAMS OF MAKING IT TO THE WORLD SERIES ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THEY CHEATED IN REGULAR SEASON GAMES, POSTSEASON GAMES, AND EVEN DURING THE WORLD SERIES IN 2017 AS WELL AS 2019. WHILE THE TEAM HAS BEEN REPRIMANDED, NONE OF THE PLAYERS HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH ANYTHING BY MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, CAUSING ANGER FROM REPORTERS AND FANS… THE YANKEES WILL HAVE TO BATTLE THEM IN MULTIPLE SERIES IN THE UPCOMING SEASON, BUT HAVE REVENGE ON THEIR SIDE THAT WILL DRIVE THEM TO PLAY VERY COMPETITIVELY.

THE YANKEES DECIDED NOT TO RESIGN PITCHING COACH LARRY ROTHSCHILD OVER THIS PAST OFFSEASON. THEY SIGNED MATT BLAKE FROM THE CLEVELAND INDIANS’ PITCHING STAFF TO REPLACE HIM. BLAKE IS APPARENTLY AHEAD OF HIS TIME AND WAS PICKED UP BY THE YANKEES WITH THE HOPES OF HELPING CONTINUE THE GROWTH OF THEIR NEW ACE, GERRIT COLE.
